50 best films from Northeast to be screened at Northeast Film Festival 2023; check full list here

6 films from Sikkim and 6 from Assam have been shortlisted to be screened at Northeast Film Festival 2023 to be held in Mumbai

A total of 50 best movies from Northeast India are to be screened at the Northeast Film Festival 2023 to be held from March 25 to 26 at National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) Campus in Mumbai.

The Northeast Film Festival 2023 is being organized by the Sikkim Film Board in collaboration with Find Studioz in an effort to highlight content creators from Northeastern states and to offer their artistic abilities the most exposure possible in the mainstream entertainment industry.

Among the 50 movies, 12 are feature films, 22 are short films and 16 are Documentaries.

Five short films– ‘Sukhim’ by Raju Kafley, ‘Myth’ by Amir Gurung, ‘The Side of Town’ by Abhishek Chettri, ‘Mohan ra Madan’ by Binesh K. Rai, ‘Chotu’ by Nirmal Bhattrai and Arjun Chapagai and a documentary- ‘Saga Dawa’ by Sujal Pradhan from Sikkim will be screened at the event.

While Baghjan Reels (Documentary), Bohag Bohag Mon and Lachit-The Warrior, ‘Xihot Douri Gol’ (The Invitation), and “The Horse From Heaven”, “Aai” (All short films) from Assam have been shortlisted for the event.

Baghjan Reels

Baghjan Reels, the 34-minute documentary that probes the environment versus development debate vis-a-vis the oil well fire incident in Assam’s Baghjan has been directed by Tahin Ojah Sharma and jointly produced by Tahin Ojah Sharma and Shantanu Sharma under the banner of RaSwar Films

Previously the documentary has been screened at several film festivals such as — 5th National Rural development film festival, Hyderabad, 2021, Finalist at Boden International Film Festival (Sweden) June 2021 etc.

Baghjan Reels also received the first award at the 5th National Rural development film festival, Hyderabad in 2021.

Lachit, The Warrior

Bohag Bohag Mon and Lachit, The Warrior, written and directed by Deputy Inspector General of Assam police Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

Mahanta’s recently won the best director award for his biopic animation documentary Lachit, The Warrior at Jaipur International Film Festival.

Lachit Barphukan, the Ahom general, who defeated the Mughals seventeen times, finally vanquished the Mughal Army in the decisive Battle of Saraighat. The biopic documentary in animation traces the birth and noble ancestry of the general, his extraordinary valour and an equally outstanding sense of self-dignity and love for his motherland, for which he beheaded his own uncle for dereliction of duty at a time when the battle was on.

“The Horse From Heaven” (Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti)

“The Horse From Heaven” (Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti) which is an official entry at the Oscar award 2023 is directed by Maharshi (Tuhin) Kashyap and produced by Nilanjana Rudra.

The storyline of the short film is about a man who thinks he owns the fastest horse in the world and wants him to run in the horse races to prove it. But what he has is actually not a horse but a donkey.

The film has on the Best Fiction Short Film Award at the very prestigious VGIK Film Festival 2022, Moscow, Russia.

It has also won the top prize at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF) 2022, beating Varun Grover’s Kiss

‘Xihot Douri Gol’ (The Invitation),

‘Xihot Douri Gol’ (The Invitation) is directed by Srishti Shreyam and produced by Bharat kalita.

“Aai”

Rebellions, which are mostly seen negatively by others, are started by individuals with their own stories to tell rooted in shared histories. “Aai” is a short film bringing to light such personal turmoil that the youth of the state had to go through to realise their dream of liberating their land and when the youth of the land suffer & their families also feel the heat of the fire burning within them.

“Aai”, story written and produced by eminent writer and lyricist Manjula Hazarika and directed by
Anupjyoti Choudhury, narrates the story how two childhood friends had to navigate their way through a militant organisation and their own beliefs, leaving their families behind.
