The bandh, which started on the midnight of September 26, is scheduled to be over at midnight tonight. While security has been beefed in the capital Imphal, the bandh itself has garnered mixed responses from the masses.

The joint students’ organisation comprising of different students’ bodies has called the General Strike demanding unconditional release of the Manipur University teachers and students who were picked up by police during the midnight raid inside the varsity campus on September 20.

Besides, the organisations are also demanding that security personnel who have taken over the University campus since the September 20 raid be asked to leave the campus immediately.

Meanwhile, Manipur chief secretary DJ Suresh Babu speaking exclusively to Northeast Live said strict action will be taken against employees who remain absent from office during the 48 hour general strike. Besides the chief secretary also maintained that shutdowns impact everyone adversely.
