The 48-hour general strike called by the All Tribal Students Union, the Kuki Students Organisation and the All Naga Students Association in the hill areas of Manipur has brought normal life to a standstill.
The impasse over the Manipur university crisis has taken a different turn. While, all this time it was under the aegis of the university community that the strikes were being called, now there is a parallel demand by other organisations to bring the impasse to an end much to the dismay of the MUSU, MUTA and MUSA who have been relentlessly demanding the removal of Manipur University Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey.
The strike has commenced since midnight yesterday and will end on August 11. The general strike has been declared as a mark of protest against the prolonged shutdown of the Manipur University.
The Kuki Students Union in border town of Moreh and Tengnoupal have shown solidarity to the 48 hour general strike called by the All Tribal Student Union.
The Kuki Students Union in Moreh has called a general strike on National Highway 102. All vehicles are being stopped at the main check post of the town.
Such is the intensity of the strike that an ambulance carrying a doctor on duty was stopped with the latter being asked to travel on foot.
Police officials remain silent as they are not given power to take stock of situation.
