45 new Omicron cases detected in Meghalaya

As many as 45 fresh cases of Omicron have been detected in Meghalaya. This was revealed by Commissioner & Secretary Health and Family Welfare, Meghalaya, Sampath Kumar.

Talking exclusively to Northeast Live, Kumar informed that out of the 47 samples sent for genome sequencing recently, 45 have tested positive for the Omicron variant. The remaining two samples have come back as Delta.

The latest figures take the official number of Omicron cases detected so far in the hill state to 49. Four cases were detected earlier in parts of East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi.

Kumar, however, said that people should not panic as most of the patients showed mild symptoms. The state Health secretary urged people to follow Covid appropriate behavior amid the rise in Omicron cases.

He added that “Herd Immunity” in the state will be achieved when everyone will get vaccinated therefore urging those eligible to get themselves jabbed. As the state has been hit by a third wave the health department has put in place different strategies to curb the covid menace based on the lessons from the first two waves of the Covid-19 with a focus on vaccination, responsible testing, and treatment.

30% of the citizens of Meghalaya have yet to get themselves vaccinated with a large population in rural areas is still hesitant regarding the vaccine. Kumar informed that the Government is spreading awareness about vaccination which is yielding some positive results in this regard.
