43 Nagaland cops suspended, 7 dismissed and 1 given compulsory retirement for drug abuse: DGP

In a major crackdown against police personnel indulging in drugs and banned substances, Nagaland Police has dismissed 7 cops, suspended 43 and gave compulsory retirement to one over the last three months, Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma said today while launching the ‘madeinagaland’ app to curb the drug menace in the state.

The 43 cops have been suspender under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS)

Nagaland Police has completed 23 departmental proceedings, 20 departmental inquiry cases are pending for those under suspension, the DGP said.

DGP Sharma said that the police has made significant progress in their efforts to combat drugs and extortion in the state. He mentioned that the police department’s internal mechanisms have been getting stronger.

DGP Sharma also revealed that they have identified Nagaland police personnel struggling with substance abuse and have issued notices to them. Around 30 officers from one unit have voluntarily sought rehabilitation. The department is closely monitoring officers who are substance abusers.

Sharma appealed to police personnel struggling with substance abuse to come forward and seek assistance from the department. However, he warned that if the department discovers substance abuse independently, there will be no leniency.

The app is part of Nagaland Police’s initiative to fight drugs and extortion. The app would allow the public to report drug and extortion-related issues online, offering the option to stay anonymous. The app also allows people to contact Nagaland Police through WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter. One can submit complaints through this website: https://madeinagaland.com/nagaland/website.

In the last three months (from June to August), Nagaland Police seized drugs worth Rs. 25 crores. 133 FIRs have been registered and 157 individuals arrested. Around 24 people have been arrested in extortion cases in recent months, the DGP said.
