42 km of India-Bangladesh Border in Meghalaya Remains Unfenced, BSF IG Urges Land Clearance

Ind-Bang Border Meghalaya: Meghalaya IG appealed people of bordering districts to willingly cooperate and hand over their land.

Despite significant strides in modernising border security, approximately 42 kilometres of the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya remain unfenced, primarily due to unresolved land acquisition issues. Inspector General of BSF Meghalaya Frontier, OP Upadhyay, has stressed the urgency of clearing these hurdles, citing national security as a priority.

IG Upadhyay said, “Roughly, around 42 km of border in Meghalaya is unfenced and primarily it is because of the non-availability of land. We are working closely with the state government, which is trying to persuade villagers whose land will be affected.”

He appealed to the people of bordering districts to willingly cooperate and hand over their land to construction agencies, calling the project one of “national importance.”

Resistance to fencing stems from villagers’ concerns that the proposed fencing alignment would restrict access to their land. Despite repeated efforts by district administrations to build consensus, many remain reluctant. Authorities continue to engage in dialogue with affected communities to find amicable solutions.

Meanwhile, BSF has significantly upgraded its border surveillance and defence capabilities across Meghalaya. Under the Electronic Surveillance of Vulnerable Patches (ESVP) scheme sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs technologies like CCTV, PTZ cameras, and other advanced tools are being deployed to monitor 32 kilometres of sensitive terrain.

Nighttime security has also seen a boost with the replacement of outdated lighting systems with high-powered floodlights, enhancing visibility and operational control. To strengthen ground-level monitoring, BSF has expanded its trained canine units, further fortifying the border against illegal activities.

The Meghalaya frontier spans nearly 400 kilometres, and BSF’s integration of next-generation digital surveillance and joint tactical coordination is redefining India’s border defence in the region. While technological advancements continue, the IG reiterated that completing the physical fencing remains crucial to securing both the nation and its border residents.
