30 Rohingyas were arrested at Churaibari in the Assam-Tripura border.
Acting on a tip-off the police swung into action and apprehended the Rohingya infiltrators who were on board a bus travelling to Guwahati and 12 among those arrested are minors. According to sources, the arrested Rohingyas hail from Debenna district in Myanmar.
As per reports, the Rohingyas entered India from the coastal town of Cox Bazar in Bangladesh, they made their way into Tripura and were headed to Guwahati when they were detected. Several of the Rohingyas also hold United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees cards.
It may be mentioned, over 670,000 Rohingyas, mainly the Muslim minority living in Myanmar, had fled the northwestern province of Rakhine in August 2017 after a wave of persecution and violence described by the United Nation as “ethnic cleansing” hit the hapless community forcing them to run for their lives.
Many Rohingyas entered Tripura and other northeastern states via Bangladesh. The state of Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh, most of which is fenced except a stretch of nearly 20 km.
Other than Tripura, the other states sharing the 1,880-km international border with Bangladesh are Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam.
