Mizoram School Education Minister, Lalchhandama Ralte announced that 28 Myanmarese refugees taking shelter in the state have successfully cleared the high school leaving certificate exam with flying colours.

The minister mentioned that a special test was held for the refugees who had completed Class10.
Minister Ralte added that more than 6,000 young refugees were admitted to schools across the state after they fled the conflict zones in Myanmar following the military coup there in February last year.

Reportedly, the refugee students were provided textbooks and school uniforms free of charge by the Mizoram government. Free midday meals were also provided to them just like the other students at primary and middle schools in the state.

The state school education department officials said that, except for a few students, the Myanmarese youngsters do not have problems studying in the Mizo language as most of them belong to the Chin community of the Chin State and the Sagaing Division in Myanmar.

It is worth pointing out that about 300 Myanmarese students used to cross the bridge over the Mizoram-Myanmar border river Tiau in Champhai district to attend schools in Zokhawthar and the surrounding villages after violent clashes broke out between the local civilian resistance groups and the Myanmar army.

Even after the clashes died down, schools could not be resumed in some areas. The civilians were in perpetual danger of being caught in the crossfire.
