272 Candidates to Contest Meghalaya Autonomous Council Polls, Only 19 Women in Fray

A total of 272 candidates are in the fray for the upcoming elections to the two Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya.
A total of 272 candidates are in the fray for the upcoming elections to the two Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya, scheduled to be held on February 21. The counting of votes will take place on February 24.
A stark gender disparity is evident in the candidate list, with only 19 female contenders compared to 253 males. Among them, 12 female candidates are contesting from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and seven from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
For KHADC, 158 candidates are contesting, including 146 males and 12 females. No female candidates have filed nominations from South West Khasi Hills District, where 11 male candidates are in the fray. The highest number of candidates – 83, including 77 males and six females are from East Khasi Hills District, which has 15 district council constituencies. In Ri Bhoi, 26 candidates, including 23 males and three females, are contesting, while in West Khasi Hills, 18 male candidates and only one female are in the fray. From Sohra SDO, out of 10 candidates, one is female, while in Eastern West Khasi Hills District, out of nine candidates, only one is female.
For JHADC, Amlarem SDO has no female candidates, with 12 male candidates in the fray. In West Jaintia Hills, out of 60 candidates, 57 are males and three females, while in East Jaintia Hills, out of 42 candidates, 38 are males and four females.
The state government has estimated that Rs 22 crore will be spent on conducting elections for both KHADC and JHADC.
