2 Youths from Tripura Missing in Sikkim’s Teesta River Mishap

Search continues for the two youths, Swapnonil Deb (26) and Debjyoti Deb (25) from Kailashahar in Unakoti district of Tripura who are among the 9 tourists missing since May 29 after the vehicle they were travelling in fell 1000 feet below into the Teesta River in Sikkim. The accident happened on May 29, the vehicle was travelling from Lachen to Lachung.
On Saturday, Tripura’s CPIM leader and Leader of Opposition in Tripura Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury met Debjyoti Deb’s family in Kailashahar.
Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury said that he has spoken with P. D. Rai, former MP from Sikkim, regarding the accident and the two missing youths from the state. Rai informed Chaudhary that the Sikkim administration is conducting rescue operations.
So far, of the total 11 people who were in the vehicle – 6 people from Odisha, 2 each from Tripura and UP and the driver, only one individual has been rescued while one person died. Heavy rains, a swelling Teesta River with strong currents is hampering the rescue operations as time is running out for the missing people.
