Amid growing cases of man-elephant conflicts across Assam, two wild elephants got electrocuted after they came in contact with high-voltage live electrical wiring in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday morning.
The incident took place in the paddy field in east Digaru area.
As per inputs, the elephants had come out of the forest in search of food.
Forest officials arrived at the scene of the incident after being informed by locals who spotted the elephant carcasses.
Following the incident, villagers performed rituals as the mighty beast is often considered a revered figure in Hindu mythology.
Last month a male wild elephant was found dead in a paddy field in the Simlapara area under Krishnai forest range of lower Assam’s Goalpara district.
Although the exact reason for the death could not be ascertained, preliminary examinations indicated that the elephant had died due to electrocution.
In 2021, at least 18 elephants were found dead in a forest in Assam’s Nagaon district due to accidental electrocution by lightning.
The incident happened in the hilly Kandali Proposed Reserve Forest in the Forest Department’s Kathiatoli Range.
