Conrad Sangma returns as CM for second term, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, both from NPP, sworn in as Deputy CMs

Conrad Sangma, 45, was sworn in as the 13th Meghalaya Chief Minister today. This is Conrad Sangma’s second consecutive term as Meghalaya’s Chief Minister.

Along with him, 11 other ministers including two Deputy CMs – Prestone Tynsong of NPP and Sniawbhalang Dhar also from NPP were sworn in.

Conrad Sangma is the national president of the National People’s Party (NPP). Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan administered the oath of office to the ministers at the swearing-in ceremony in Shillong.

The other ministers who were sworn in today are:

AL Hek, BJP
Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh, NPP
AT Mondal, NPP
Marcuise N Marak, NPP
Rakkam A Sangma, NPP
Comingone Ymbon, NPP
Shakliar Warjri, HSPDP
Kyrmen Shylla, UDP
Paul Lyngdoh, UDP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam CM and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim CM PS Tamang, Jharkhand CM Hement Soren, BJP national President JP Nadda and other senior leaders were present at the swearing-in ceremony of Conrad Sangma led government in the state.

The presence of PM Modi, HM Shah and Nadda at the swearing-in ceremony is the BJP’s clear message to the nation and the Congress in particular, that the Northeast means a lot to BJP, the party cares for the people and the states of the region and the region will play a significant role in the 2024 general elections.

PM Modi attending the swearing-in ceremony in Meghalaya and then going to Kohima for Neiphiu Rio and his government being sworn in in Nagaland is a direct snub to Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge who had said that there is nothing big about the results of Northeast states.

Also present at the swearing-in ceremony in Meghalaya were Conrad Sangma’s mother Soradini Sangma, wife Mehtab Chandee and brother James Sangma.

Meghalaya TMC leaders including president Charles Pyngrope and Mukul Sangma did not attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Conrad, father of two lovely daughters, who are fond of singing and playing the guitar, would once again be heading a team of 11 Cabinet ministers— eight from his own party NPP, two from UDP and one each from the BJP and the HSPDP.

Four of them including the Chief Minister are from the Garo Hills region and 8 of the cabinet ministers are from the Khasi-Jaintia hills region.

The NPP emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya winning 26 seats out of the 60 constituencies that went to vote on February 27.
Thirty-one is the number needed to form government in a 60-member Assembly. The number of seats won by NPP, BJP, HSPDP, PDF, UDP and the Independents adds up to 45, a comfortable number for the NPP and its allies to form the government.
