11 Arrested in Police Crackdown on Illegal Coal Mining in Umrangso; Unreported Deaths Surface

First Published: 19th January, 2025 16:11 IST

One such tragic incident reportedly occurred in December 2024, when two miners ventured into a rat-hole mining shaft.

In a major operation against illegal coal mining, the Dima Hasao police have arrested 11 individuals in connection with illegal mining activities at the Assam Coal Quarry in Umrangso. Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects have been brought to Haflong Police Station for questioning. However, the police have refrained from disclosing the names of the arrested individuals, citing the ongoing investigation.

In addition to the crackdown, the police have launched a probe into unreported deaths at the coal mining site. Sources reveal that incidents of fatalities at the quarry have frequently gone unreported due to the mine owners compensating the families of victims to suppress the incidents.

One such tragic incident reportedly occurred in December 2024, when two miners ventured into a rat-hole mining shaft. A collapse of coal debris buried one miner alive. Although the body was later recovered, the incident was not reported to authorities as the mine owner compensated the victim’s family with a sum ranging from Rs. 1.5 to Rs. 2 lakh.

In another incident in 2023, a crane operating within the quarry site collapsed onto a dumper, which then fell on a worker, killing him on the spot. This incident too went unreported as the mine owner provided compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the deceased worker’s family.

Sources further indicate that fatalities at the quarry site occur with alarming regularity, raising serious concerns about safety and accountability. The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover additional unreported deaths and identify others involved in the illegal mining operations.
