This achievement makes him the first Assamese player to lead an IPL franchise, a significant milestone for the region.
In a landmark moment for Northeast cricket, Assam’s Riyan Parag is set to captain Rajasthan Royals for the first three matches of IPL 2025.
The dynamic all-rounder, a vital asset for Rajasthan Royals over the years, will captain the team in their opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. He will also lead the side in their home encounters against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
This achievement makes him the first Assamese player to lead an IPL franchise, a significant milestone for the region.
Riyan’s appointment comes as Rajasthan Royals’ regular captain, Sanju Samson, continues to recover from an injury that currently limits his wicket-keeping and fielding duties.
While Samson focuses on his batting, the franchise has entrusted Riyan with the leadership role—a responsibility he has earned through his impressive captaincy record with Assam in domestic cricket.
This milestone has sparked excitement across the Northeast, especially in Guwahati, where fans eagerly await the proud moment.
As Riyan Parag steps onto the field as captain, his leadership marks a new chapter in the region’s cricketing journey, inspiring countless young talents. The upcoming matches promise to be special, with Guwahati’s support sure to resonate loudly across stadiums.
It needs to be mentioned that, Riyan Parag joined Rajasthan Royals in 2019. He was picked by the franchise during the IPL 2019 auction and has been a part of the team since then.
Riyan Parag started playing cricket at a very young age. He began his cricketing journey in his hometown of Guwahati, Assam. He made his debut in professional cricket for Assam in 2017, playing in the Indian domestic circuit. Parag made his debut for Assam in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season. He was only 15 years old at the time, showcasing his talent at an early age. His consistent performances in domestic cricket eventually led to his selection for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2019 IPL.
