Rafael Nadal created history as he became the first man to win the 21st Grand Slam title in the Australian Open 2022 men’s singles final at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, breaking his tie with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer for the most men’s singles Grand Slam titles in history.

Two sets down, the legendary Spaniard rallied to defeat the world number two, Daniil Medvedev, by 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and 7-5 as he clinched the record-breaking Australian Open trophy at Rod Laver Arena.

The title match lasted an incredible five hours and 24 minutes.

In addition, the Spaniard has become only the fourth man in history to win multiple crowns at all four majors. 

As expected, the Russian started the match on a high note, breaking Nadal twice in the first set and taking the lead. The tiebreak was won by Medvedev in the second set.

With momentum on his side, the 25-year-old kept charging, but the Spaniard secured the third, fourth and final set on his terms and marched towards the record-breaking Grand Slam.
