A Kashmiri girl studying in Class 7 scripted history when she became the first one from her state to represent India and win a gold medal in the World Kickboxing Championship, in the under 14 category, held in Cairo from October 22-24.

Tajmul Islam studying in Bandipora’s Army Goodwill School defeated Argentina’s Lalina in the Final to become the Kickboxing Champion. Born in Tarkpora in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district Tajmul had earlier represented India in Italy in 2016 too.

After returning home from talking to TOI Tajmul said that she fought four bouts in the championship- two against players from host Egypt and her final two bouts were against the players from France and Argentina.

On the strategy Tajmul had adopted for her championship bout she said that she simply tried to keep her cool against an opponent who was more agile and nimble which eventually gave her an upper hand.

The kickass kickboxer is third among her five siblings and her father is a businessman based in Mumbai. Although she has bone-breaking skills Tajmul dreams of becoming a orthopaedic doctor. ‘I want to break as well as join bones,’ she told The Times of India.

She is also a brand ambassador of the flagship girl child campaign Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.
