Former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar passed away at the age of 77 in Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital after suffering from prolonged illness.
The former batsman, who led India to triumphs in England and West Indies in 1971, scored 2,113 runs in 37 Test matches between 1966 and 1974.
He also represented India in its first ever One Day International game in 1974. Wadekar later served as coach, manager and chairman of selectors for India.
The government of India had honoured him with the Arjuna Award and Padmashri. He was also awarded the CK Nayudu Lifetime achievement award for his contribution to Indian cricket.
The tragic news led to an outpour of emotions and tributes poured in for the former India skipper on Twitter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a message hailing him for his contribution to Indian cricket.
Current India head coach Ravi Shastri said it was a sad moment for Indian cricket. Many former and current cricket players also paid tribute to the cricketer.
