Commonwealth Games: Lawn bowls team including Assam girl creates history

The lawn bowls women’s team created history on Monday by assuring the first-ever Lawn-bowl medal at Commonwealth Games by defeating Norfolk Island and cruising to the semi-finals.
The four-women team comprising Assam girl Nayanmoni Saikia, Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, and Pinki defeated New Zealand 16-13. The quartet started strong from the word go and raced to an 11-0 lead.
What is interesting to note here is that, 33-year-old Nayanmoni Saikia, who hails from Assam’s Sarupathar, has become the first woman and second person from the state to win a medal at the commonwealth games after Jayanta Talukdar.
The team will take on South Africa today around 4:15 pm.
Meanwhile, wishes are pouring in from across Assam, with people wishing the team the very best for today’s match.
Moreover, celebrations have already broken out at Nayanmoni’s residence in Sarupathar. The family members are hopeful for a gold medal from the team.
