Assam Cricketer Uma Chetry Set For T20 India Debut Today

First Published: 5th July, 2024 16:12 IST

Uma Chetry was selected to the Indian squad for the South Africa series and she is looking forward to make her India debut

Will Uma Chetry script history today by becoming the second female cricketer from Assam after Ritu Dhrub to play for the Indian Women’s cricket team when the Indian Eves take on their South African counterpart in match number 1 of the 3-match T20 series in Chennai?

Chetry, who comes from a small village in the Golaghat district in Assam, is the first female cricketer from Assam to have been selected for the Indian Test squad. Though she was not featured in the Playing XI in the lone test match against South Africa, her selection in the team has been dubbed as a big moment for women’s cricket in Assam.

The young wicket-keeper-batter was also part of the ODI squad that drubbed the Proteas Women 3-0, but she warmed the bench for the entire series, waiting for a chance to prove herself.

But T20 is a different ball game, and the shortest format of the game suits her best.

In the six T20 innings in which she has batted so far, Uma Chetry has scored a total of 102 runs, with 26 being her top score.

As a wicketkeeper, Chetry is lightning-quick behind the stumps. She brings variety to the team, and her selection will only strengthen the Indian line-up.

The three-match T20 series will be played in Chennai. All the matches will start at 7:00 pm, and the live telecast of the IND-W vs SA-W cricket matches will be available on Sports18 1 and Sports18 1 HD TV channels in India.
