Olympic silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya became the first Indian wrestler to claim three successive gold medals in the Asian Wrestling Championships.
India achieved great success on Saturday after Dahiya comprehensively defeated Kazakhstan’s Kalzhan Rakhat 12-2 in the final match of 57 kg category to win a gold medal at the Asian Championships.
Dahiya also became the first-ever Indian freestyle wrestler to win a hat-trick of Asian Championship gold medals.
The champion was seen lagging initially in all his matches in the tournament, but every time he made a strong comeback to conquer his opponent.
In the final match, the Kazakhstan wrestler initially took the lead on Ravi. After this, he started defending his lead by playing defensively. However, Ravi intensified his attacking game and took 6 consecutive points one after the other to beat his opponent 12-2.
Another hope for India in the Asian Wrestling Championship was Bajrang Punia, but he lost the final match in the 65 kg weight category. Punia was defeated by Iran’s Rahman 3-1. He had to be content with the silver medal.
