Has Assam Congress accepted defeat in the Rajya Sabha Polls scheduled to be held tomorrow? With just a day left for the crucial Rajya Sabha elections in Assam, the unity of the opposition has been questioned yet again after the Congress launched a scathing attack on the Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF, alleging that the party has resorted to cross-voting.

During a press briefing held last night, APCC President Bhupen Bora stated that several MLAs of the party have been sold out and that Congress will no longer bank on AIUDF support.

Borah also stated that the intention of the AIUDF MLAs in question is known to party chief Badruddin Ajmal.

While this big statement might be an indication that Congress has virtually accepted defeat in the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls, the party has refused to back out from the contest despite the odds, with the support of 28 MLAs. Of the 28, Bhupen Borah said, 26 are from the Congress, 1 from Raijor Dal and 1 from CPIM.

Clearly, without the AIUDF by its side, Congress is sure to lose both seats to the BJP and its ally United People’s Party Liberal.

Out of the 126 MLAs in the Assam Assembly, BJP has 63, while its allies AGP and UPPL has 9 and 7 respectively.

The BPF on the other hand has 3 MLAs. On the opposition, Congress has 27 MLAs, CPI-M has 1, AIUDF has 15 and Raijor Dol has 1 MLA.
