Golaghati is one of the 60 Legislative Assembly constituencies of Tripura which comes under Sipahijala district and is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. It is also part of West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency. The estimated population of Golaghati in 2023 is 8,744.
BJP candidate Birendra Kishore Debbarma is the sitting MLA. He won the seat for the party in 2018 Assembly elections with 19,228 votes defeating CPI(M) candidate Keshab Debbarma with a margin of 3,498 votes. But this time Birendra Kishore did not get the ticket. Instead, it is Himani Debbarma who is contesting the Golaghati seat on a BJP ticket.
Himani Debbarma contested the 2013 assembly elections from Charilam on a Congress ticket but lost to CPI-M’s Ramendra Narayan Debbarma. She later joined BJP. Himani took over as the Chairperson for Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights in October 2022.
CPI-M too has changed its candidate for the seat. It is fielding Brinda Rani Debbarma instead of Keshab Debbarma who lost the 2018 polls but had won the seat in 2013.
