The 6-time Sohiong MLA was attending an election meeting when he collapsed
In some sad news coming in just ahead of the Meghalaya elections on February 27, former Meghalaya Home Minister and UDP candidate from Sohiong, HDR Lyngdoh passed away this evening.
He was 69. The veteran politician who had won the Sohiong seat 6 times and got elected as MLA and one-time as MDC of Sohiong, Lyngdoh was attending an election meeting when he collapsed. He was rushed to the Bethany hospital in Shillong where he was declared dead.
Lyngdoh was the Home Minister in the Mukul Snagma-led Congress government. He first won the Sohiong seat in 1988 as a Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) candidates. He retained the seat till 1998 on a HSPDP ticket. He lost the seat to RS Lyngdoh of UDP but regained it as an MDC on a Congress ticket in 1999.
Again in 2003 he won the seat as a Congress candidate. He retained the seat till 2018. In 2018, he lost the seat to HSPDP’s Samin Malngiang.
This time he was planning to fight on a UDP ticket.
