The ‘mameru’ ceremony, also known as the ‘mosaalu’, is a traditional Gujarati pre-wedding ritual that holds great significance for the bride. Mameru means maternal uncle (mama or mausa) in Gujarati, highlighting the central role of the bride’s maternal uncle and her family in this tradition.
Usually, the ceremony takes place a few days before the wedding.

How is the ‘mameru’ ceremony celebrated?

During the mameru ceremony, the bride’s maternal uncle and his family visit the bride’s home, with blessings and gifts such as sarees, jewellery, sweets, and other items symbolizing prosperity and happiness.

The saree gifted to the bride is usually of a particular design called the ‘Panetar’ which is considered auspicious and is traditionally worn by Gujarati brides during the wedding ceremony.

The ceremony is often accompanied by traditional music, dance, and a festive feast, making it a joyous occasion for all involved.

After the two grand pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika Marchant–one star-studded event in Jamnagar, Gujarat and the other on board a Mediterranean cruise in Italy, the Ambani family kicked off the couple’s lavish ‘mameru’ ceremony at the Antilia in Mumbai on June 3.

Radhika Merchant wore a beautiful traditional pink-orange coloured lehenga, while Anant Ambani wore orange-coloured sherwani with a jacket.

Radhika Merchant also wore her mother’s vintage temple jewellery for her ‘mameru’ ceremony.
