At a time when mobile phones have become an indispensable part of everybody’s lives, a village in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district has banned the use of mobile phones for children under 18 years of age.

Anyone found violating the ban rule will be fined Rs 200, informed Gajanan Tale, the sarpanch of the Bansi gram panchayat.

The resolution was adopted “unanimously” during a Gram Sabha on November 11 to tackle addiction.

Children become addicted to using their phones to play games or browse websites deemed inappropriate for their age due to excessive and unrestricted screen time during Covid-19. This has affected their studies, said Gajanan Tale.

Tale said all parents have been asked to ensure that their children strictly adhere to the ban.

There might be some difficulties at first with implementing the decision into practise, but both parents and children will receive guidance to make the change successful, Tale added.

Meanwhile, villagers welcome the mobile ban and said that they will inculcate good habits among students.

Earlier, in order to tackle resident cell phone addiction, Mohityanche Vadgaon village in Maharashtra’s Sangli district opted to implement an “evening detox.”

The decision was made there on this year’s Independence Day. The village prohibited both children and adults from using phones between the hours of 7 pm and 8:30 pm every day.
