Santoor lost its greatest exponent today. Shivkumar Sharma, whose melodic and pleasing renditions on santoor left many spellbound, passed away at the age of 84 today. He died of a cardiac arrest.

As per reports, the santoor maestro was suffering from Kidney problems and was under dialysis. The Shiv of the famous Shiv-Hari duo, gave music to Yash Chopra’s Silsila, Lamhe, Chandni etc.

Sharma was instrumental in bringing a lesser-known instrument from Jammu & Kashmir to national and international focus. His untyring fingers gave Santoor a classical stature briging it at par with witth others.

Right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sarod exponent Amjad Ali Khan many prominent personalities from India have condoled the death of the maestro.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Shivkumar Sharma’s demise has left the cultural world ‘poorer’.

At the same time Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoling the death of Shivkumar Sharma said that the death of Shivkumar Sharma has left a gaping hole in the realm of Indian classical music.
