Students will now be able to pursue two full-time academic programmes simultaneously in physical mode, this was announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday.
UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar informed that students will be able to study these degrees in the physical mode of teaching, either at the same university or from various universities.
However, Universities will have the flexibility to decide whether or not to provide such a programme, Kumar said.
Only lecture-based courses, such as undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programmes, will be covered by the guidelines. MPhil and PhD programmes will not be included in the same system, he further added.
The two programmes chosen by students at the same time, according to Kumar, must be of the same level.
For example, students can only pursue two undergraduate, two postgraduate, or two diploma degrees at the same time. Students can pursue two full-time degrees in three ways.
First, a student can pursue two full-time academic programmes in the physical mode as long as the class timing for one programme do not overlap with the class times for the other.
Second, individuals can enrol in one programme in person and another online or via distance mode.
Third, students can enrol in up to two online or distance mode degree programmes at the same time.
In two weeks, guidelines for the same are expected to be released.
Kumar also stated that students will not be allowed to use credits obtained in one programme to fulfil the requirements of another.
