In a major security breach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was left stranded in a flyover in Punjab when he was enroute to Hussainiwala War Memorial. The cavalcade of PM Modi was blocked by protestors about 30 km from his destination.  After being stuck for nearly 20 mins on the flyover PM Modi had to return to the Bhatinda Airport leading to his rally at Ferozeopur to be cancelled.

Modi was supposed to fly to the Hussainiwala after landing at Bhatinda Airport. But inclement weather forced him to change plans and take the road to visit the war memorial via road when the incident took place.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has termed the incident a ‘massive security breach’ in PM’s security. In a statement about the incident, MHA said that the convoy of PM Modi proceeded to travel by  road after “confirmation of necessary security arrangements by the DGP Punjab Police.”

Calling it a ‘major lapse’ in PM’s security MHA it said that Punjab Police had to make the necessary security arrangements. “They have to make necessary arrangements for logistics, security as well as keep a contingency plan ready. Also in view of the contingency plan the Punjab Government has to deploy additional security to secure any movement by road, which were clearly not deployed,” MHA said in the statement.

MHA has sought a detailed report from the state government. The State Government has also been asked to fix responsibility for this lapse and take strict action.
