Locals protest against demolition in Shaheen Bagh; encroachment drive halted

The locals sat on roads and also blocked bulldozers right in front of the vehicles that were brought for the demolition drive.

Protests erupted in Shaheen Bagh ahead of an anti-encroachment drive on Monday as hundreds of people including women started dharna in the area as soon as the SDMC officials reached the spot with bulldozers to carry out the exercise.

In what appeared to be total chaos amidst heavy deployment of security forces including the paramilitary, locals of Shaheen Bagh were seen trying every sort to block the bulldozers from going with their drive.

The locals sat on roads and also blocked bulldozers right in front of the vehicles that were brought for the demolition drive.

Notably, the SDMC has prepared a 10-day action plan to remove encroachment from several areas, including Shaheen Bagh.

Shaheen Bagh had become one of the most prominent spots of the nationwide agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act two years ago.

Now, the situation soon turned into a political scene after Congress workers sat alongside locals on the roads and stood in the way of the bulldozers brought for the demolition by the BJP-dominated civic body.

The Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Okhla, Amanatullah Khan, also joined the protests at Shaheen Bagh.

Along with that, a petition challenging the demolition drive in Shaheen Bagh was mentioned before the Supreme Court earlier today to which Chief justice of India NV Ramana has referred it to the bench of Justice L N Rao bench.

The bench was scheduled to hear the petition from 2 pm today.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP has hit out at the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party for attempting to stall the eviction drive.

Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Kumar Gupta justified the eviction drive stating it to be against illegal settlers and not against any particular community.
