Kapil Sibal ditches Congress; SP backs his Rajya Sabha nominations

Eleven seats of the Upper House are headed for elections on June 10, with the fight being between the ruling BJP and the SP.

Senior Congress leader and former union minister Kapil Sibal has ditched the party and filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha on Wednesday in presence of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Speaking to the media after filing the nomination, Sibal said, “You know that I used to raise my voice in Rajya Sabha. Last time also I was a UP candidate. I used to raise your voice then and will do the same in the next six years as well. I am not a Congress leader anymore. I had submitted my resignation on May 16.”

Kapil Sibal, a prominent face of the G-23 group of dissenting leaders, has resigned from the party and filed nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections as an independent in Lucknow backed by the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Sibal, whose tenure as a Congress Rajya Sabha member ends in July, went to the Uttar Pradesh assembly premises with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and other senior leaders to file his papers.

Sibal’s resignation comes close on the heels of Sunil Jakhar and Hardik Patel resigning from the Congress, which recently held a ‘Chintan Shivir’ in Udaipur.

Eleven seats of the Upper House are headed for elections on June 10, with the fight being between the ruling BJP and the SP.

Of the 11 seats that fall vacant on July 4, five are of the BJP, four of the SP, two of BSP and one of Congress.
