Buying oil from Russia not in India’s interest: India-US 2+2 talks

United States President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a successful virtual meeting during which Prez Biden said that buying more oil from Russia was not

United States President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a successful virtual meeting during which Prez Biden said that buying more oil from Russia was not in India’s interest and could hamper the US response to the war.

Commenting on India’s energy imports from Russia, Biden said that India’s actions do not violate the US’ sanctions amid the war in Ukraine. But India’s position in the world would not be enhanced by relying on Russian energy sources, he added.

In the hour-long video call, the top two leaders publicly expressed their concern at the destruction inside Ukraine, especially in Bucha, where many civilians were killed.

Meanwhile, PM Modi highlighted the importance that India placed on the safety of the civilian population in Ukraine and the uninterrupted supply of humanitarian aid to them.

“Our talks today are taking place at a time when the situation in Ukraine remains very worrying,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also condemned the killings of innocent civilians in Bucha and demanded a fair investigation. “We hope that the ongoing talks between Russia and Ukraine will pave the way for peace,” he further said.

Modi further highlighted the importance of the India-America partnership for global peace. President Biden said, “At the root of our partnership is a deep connection between our people – ties of family, of friendship, and of shared values.”

The two leaders emphasised their shared commitment as leaders of the world’s largest democracies to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
