A mountaineer from Assam has been confirmed to be one of those missing in the massive avalanche at Draupadi Ka Danda-II mountain peak in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on October 4.

The missing climber has been identified as Deepshikha Hazarika from Guwahati.

Deepshikha is a trainee at the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM).

Meanwhile, Deepshikha’s parents are distraught after receiving the news of her disappearance.

Talking to Northeast Live, Deepshikha’s parents appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to make sure that their daughter returns home safe.

According to a release by the NIM, 41 people, including 34 trainees and 7 mountaineering instructors, were hit by the avalanche.

It may be mentioned that the avalanche struck at Mount Draupadi Ka Danda-II peak. Four bodies were recovered yesterday.

While at least eight members of the mountaineering team who were trapped in an avalanche were rescued immediately.

Meanwhile, teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and NIM reached Advance Base Camp to rescue the trainees of NIM Uttarkashi, who were hit by an avalanche.

Giving information to ANI, SDRF Commandant Manikant Mishra said that the three teams would reach the Intermediate Camp first and then travel 1.5 kilometers to the avalanche site to rescue the 26 trainees and four bodies trapped at the avalanche site.
