Cannes Film Festival 2023: Here is the list of NE film personalities attending the coveted event

The 76th edition of the film festival kicked off today amid high voltage glamour as stars from across the globe descended on the red carpet

The Cannes Film Festival 2023, which is underway at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France, had a grand opening with many new film personalities making their official debut on the red carpet.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has a Northeast India connection, as 13 film personalities from the region are representing the region as part of an Indian delegation.

Here is the full list of filmmakers, actors and actresses from Northeast who are representing their respective states at the festival

Kangabam Tomba (Manipur)

Kangabam Tomba is a veteran Manipuri actor. His film ‘ISHANOU’ directed by Aribam Syam Sharma will be screened at cannes classic section at the Cannes Film festival. Ishanou is the only Indian movie to be considered for the Cannes Film Festival’s Classic Section, which celebrates the restored versions of timeless classics.

The movie features Anoubam Kiranmala and Kangjam Tomba and focuses on the Maibi culture of Manipur.

Mayanglambam Romi Meitei (Manipur)

Romi Meitei is a Manipuri director and lyricist. He is a recipient of several awards at several film festivals organized in India and abroad and has directed movies for around two decades. Some of the notable movies that he directed include Thoiba Thoibi, Inga Nonglakta, Manithoiba, Natephamda Tero, Chumthang Makhong, Mikithi, and Dharmagi Mingda Imagidamak.

The Romi diectorial movie ‘Our Home/Eikhoigi Yum’ received the FIPRESCI Award for Best International Film of the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala.

 He has also made films that are adaptations of famous radio plays and Shumang Kumheis. Imagi Laman Singamdre, Yotpi, Sanagi Nga, Sangbrei Managi Chenghi Manam, and Hiktharaba Samji: Pizza are among such films.

Romi Meitei also contributes to social work. He is the Chairman of the Mami Thawan Foundation, a non-profit foundation that provides services for the welfare of Manipur society.

Ashok Veilou (Manipur)

Ashok Veilou is a noted filmmaker from Manipur. Ashok Veilou hails from Purul, in Manipur’s Senapati district. He is a graduate of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTII) in film design, direction, and screenwriting. Ashok Veilou’s documentary ‘Look at the Sky” won the Golden Royal Tiger Award at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

Pooja Sharma (Sikkim)

Pooja Sharma is the Chairperson of the Sikkim Film Promotion Board. She will also be representing Sikkim at the Cannes Film Festival.

Samten Bhutia (Sikkim)

Samten Bhutia is an Indian film director and writer from Sikkim. He has been actively involved in the Nepalese film industry over the last decade. His recently directed movie Taandro was screened at the Dhaka International Film Festival. His first film, Latter, was well received by people from Nepal and India. He also acted in a short film, Myth.

Kivin Shohe (Nagaland)

Kivini Shohe is a prominent filmmaker from Nagaland and a founding member of the Film Association of Nagaland (FAN). Shohe is also a recipient of the Governor’s Award 2014 in the field of arts for filmmaking.

Carol Andrea Zharieno Tongtirepla Kevichusa (Nagaland)

Andrea Kevichüsa is an Indian model and actor from Nagaland. She made her acting debut with Anek in 2022 alongside Ayushmann Khurrana, for which she won the Filmfare Award 2023 for Best Female Debut. Kevichüsa has worked with several fashion designers and notable brands.

Commander Shagpliang (Meghalaya)

Commander Shangpliang is a filmmaker, director, and social worker based in Meghalaya. He is also the president of the Meghalaya Film Makers Association (MeFilMA).

Nicholas Lemtor Kharkongor (Meghalaya)

Nicholas Kharkongor is a director from Meghalaya. He made his directorial debut with his 2012 film Fair and Lowly. His feature films include the 2016 Mantra and the 2019 Axone.

Nyago Ete (Arunachal Pradesh)

Nyago Ete is a director/cinematographer who has worked as assistant cinematographer in last year’s Bollywood film Bhediya which was shot in Arunachal Pradesh. An FTII pune graduate he has over 7 years of experience in making films. His movie Orunasol Man was adjudged best feature film in Arunachal Film festival 2018.

Millo Sunka (Arunachal Pradesh)

Millo Sunka is a talented actor from Arunachal Pradesh. Millo recently made history by becoming the first Arunachalee actor to win the Best Actress award for her short film “Nocturnal Burger” at the Prisma Rome International Film Awards held in March 2023.

The film also received official selection at the Aspen Film Festival 2023 and won the Best Narrative Short Film award, Best Director of a Narrative Short Film, Best Editing, Best Production Design, and the Bronze Tilapia Award for Social Awareness at the Tiéte Film Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Napoleon Renthlei Zolian Thanga (Mizoram)

Napoleon Renthlei Zolian Thanga from Mizoram is representing the state at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Aldrin Zosangliana( Mizoram)

Aldrin Zosangliana is the president of the Mizoram Producers’ Guild (MPG), an organisation of film-makers. He is also representing Mizoram at the Cannes Film Festival.
