Bappi Lahiri is one of those singers who introduced India to disco. He sang several hit songs, including Chalte Chalte, Disco Dancer, and Sharaabi. Bappi Da’s last Bollywood song was titled “Bhankas,” which was a part of Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor’s 2020 movie Baaghi 3.

Popularly known as Bappi Da, Lahiri is known for popularising the use of synthesised disco music in Indian cinema and singing some of his own compositions. He had delivered major box office successes in several Bollywood and Bengali films and remained one of the top music composers of Bollywood during the 80s and 90s.

Lahiri also had a brief political stint when he joined the BJP in 2014. He was declared a BJP candidate from the Srerampur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal for the 2014 general elections and lost.

Though he was known for disco-style songs, he also composed some melodious songs as well, such as the songs from Chalte Chalte and Zakhmee.

Portions of Lahiri’s song “Thoda Resham Lagta Hai” were included in the 2002 song “Addictive” by American R&B singer Truth Hurts. The Indian music label sued the American record company, following which Lahiri was listed in the song’s credits.

In late 2016, Lahiri voiced the character of Tamatoa in the Hindi-dubbed version of Disney’s 3D animated fantasy adventure film Moana; he also composed and sang “Shona”, the Hindi version of “Shiny”.

This was his first time dubbing for an animated character, and he also appeared in Ramratan’s song “Yeh Hai Dance Bar.” He won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 63rd Filmfare Awards.
