Despite the Kota administration’s efforts to decrease the suicide cases in the city by installing spring-loaded fans in rooms among other measures, a 16-year-old NEET aspirant from Jharkhand allegedly hanged herself in her hostel room in the Vigyan Nagar area in Kota, Rajasthan, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased, Richa Sinha, who was preparing for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), was found hanging in her hostel room late on Tuesday.
As per the police, they received information about Sinha’s death around 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday from the private hospital where she was taken.
The police couldn’t find any suicide notes in her room. The body has been sent to MBS Hospital for a post-mortem and police are investigating the matter to find out the cause of death.
Hailing from Jharkhand, Richa, a class 11 student, was enrolled in the coaching institute in Kota this year.
This is the 24th case of student suicide in Kota this year. Fifteen students preparing for competitive exams killed themselves in Kota last year.
Earlier, spring-loaded fans were installed in rooms, and anti-suicide nets were installed in balconies and lobbies of hostels in Kota to prevent suicide cases among the students.
Over two lakh students go to Kota annually to prepare for competitive exams such as the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for engineering and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges.
