Three elephant calves were killed in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district on Wednesday night.
The elephants were hit by a truck when they were crossing the road at Jagamarla cross on Chittoor-Palamaneru National Highway, said locals. The accident occurred in Palamaneru Mandal of Chittoor district, reported India Today.
As soon as the forest officials got the information, they reached the spot and launched an investigation.
“Three infant elephants died after a truck hit them while crossing the road,” officials said. The truck driver has been at large since he hit the elephants. The forest officials also said that such accidents happen due to rash driving by truck drivers.
“We will register a case under the relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act and action will be taken accordingly,” the officials said as quoted by news agency ANI.
Earlier, in a viral video, a herd of elephants could be seen entering an Andhra Pradesh village to drink water. A herd of seven elephants on Wednesday morning entered Pujariguda village in Parvathipuram district in Andhra Pradesh to quench their thirst. The video showed tuskers drinking water stored in two buckets by the villagers.
A group of seven elephants, including a baby elephant, reached the village as the villagers tried to shoo away the jumbos. Locals reportedly said that the presence of a herd of elephants created a panic in the village
