The Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra to be held in Imphal on July 8 will now cover a stretch of just 100 metres.
This decision was taken today hours after shots were fired at the Lord Jagannath chariot outside the Shree Shree Govindajee temple in Manipur’s Imphal East district.
The Rath Yatra will take place on July 8 amid tight security, state government officials said.
Currently, a casper (a bullet-proof, mine and ambush resistant vehicle) has been placed to guard the under-construction chariot, security has been beefed up.
Manipur government officials told Northeast Live that the Yatra, popularly known as Konung Kang, will be held on July 8 without much fanfare. It will be held to pray for peace in the state that has been rocked by violence since May 4, 2023.
Unidentified people opened fire at Lord Jagannath’s chariot at around 12:30 AM on Friday. No injuries or casualties were reported.
