UK: Opposition attacks PM Boris Johnson over trip to Gujarat JCB factory

The MPs also questioned if the British Prime Minister brought up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Opposition parties in the UK have questioned in Parliament Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to visit a British-owned bulldozer factory in Gujarat during his visit to India last week.

A number of Labour Party MPs, including Indian-origin Nadia Whittome, questioned Johnson’s visit to the JCB factory in Halol despite the use of some of the company’s equipment in the controversial demolition of properties in north-west Delhi in the wake of recent communal clashes in Jahangirpuri.

She pointed to Mr Johnson’s photographs with an excavator on a visit to the factory of British heavy equipment maker JCB near Vadodara soon after North Delhi Municipal Corporation, controlled by BJP, razed homes and shops in Jahangirpuri.

The MPs also questioned if the British Prime Minister brought up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During an ‘Urgent Question’ tabled in the House of Commons on Tuesday by the Scottish National Party (SNP) member of Parliament, Ian Blackford, the Opposition raised cries of “where is he?” after a junior minister was left to answer questions on the topic of “Prime Minister’s Visit to India”.

During his two-day visit to India last week, Boris Johnson had been asked about issues related to human rights to which he said, “Our relations with India, and how to deal with questions like human rights or democratic values…of course, we have these conversations. But, the advantage of our friendship is we can have these conversations in a friendly and private way.”
