The suspect of Tuesday’s violent rampage in subway system in New York’s Brooklyn was arrested on Wednesday after a day-long manhunt.
Police had identified 62-year-old Frank James as the suspected gunman who detonated two smoke canisters as the train was pulling into a Brooklyn station, before firing 33 shots into the crowd.
James was spotted by officers on a Manhatten street after a tipster’s call led police to his whereabouts. He was taken into custody without incident.
Frank is now facing a federal charge for a ‘terrorist attack’, authorities informed.
Earlier on Tuesday, at least 23 people were injured in the morning rush-hour attack that prompted new calls to fight a surge of violence in the city’s transit system.
Reportedly, the gunman fired a barrage of at least 33 bullets where 10 people were hit directly, including five hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police said that 13 more people suffered from smoke inhalation or were otherwise injured in the chaos as panicked riders fled the smoke-filled subway car.
The attackers fled the Brooklyn platform in panic, leaving a subway car filled with screaming commuters and bleeding victims.
Police later found a Glock 17.9 mm semi-handgun in the subway and upon searching the subway car, investigators found two non-detonated smoke grenades, a hatchet, gasoline, fireworks, and a key to a U-Haul van.
