Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post today amid the country’s greatest economic crisis since independence.

Meanwhile,Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Professor Channa Jayasumana has also submitted his letter of resignation to the President.

Even as unrest and protests against the government grew, the Rajapaksa brothers – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa – defied calls for resignation.

It may be mentioned that a violent clash erupted outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s office on Monday, following rumours that Mahinda Rajapaksa may offer to resign as prime minister.

Taking to Twitter, Mahinda Rajapaksa wrote, “While emotions are running high in #lka, I urge our general public to exercise restraint & remember that violence only begets violence. The economic crisis we’re in needs an economic solution which this administration is committed to resolving.

Sri Lanka has been experiencing severe fuel, medical, and electricity shortages for about a month. Furthermore, the cost of key items has risen dramatically.

The problem has been exacerbated by a paucity of foreign currency, which has left the country unable to pay for essential food and fuel imports.

Since April 9, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Sri Lanka.
