Faced with the country’s worst virus outbreak in two years, Shanghai has reported 12 new COVID-19-related deaths on April 22, up from 11 the previous day.

The city recorded 20,634 new local asymptomatic infections on Friday, rebounding from 15,698 a day earlier. Total new symptomatic cases reached 2,736, up from 1,931 on April 21, official data showed.

While clocking upwards of 400,000 infections since March, Shanghai has recorded just 25 deaths, with the first from this outbreak reported on Monday.

Authorities have said the deaths have been elderly patients with underlying conditions, who mostly had not received coronavirus vaccines.

Shanghai reported more than 18,000 new and mostly asymptomatic coronavirus cases on Thursday, the second day in a row with infections below the 20,000 mark.

A total of about 12 million people previously barred from leaving their homes have in the past few days been permitted outdoors.

Meanwhile, authorities in Shanghai have said they will tighten the enforcement of lockdown measures, as a Covid surge continues in China’s financial capital.

New measures include placing electronic door alarms to prevent those infected from leaving, as well as evacuating people to disinfect their homes.

The restrictions will take Shanghai’s lockdown into its fifth week.

Shanghai city officials said all infected patients and close contacts will be transferred to government-run centralized quarantine.

In addition, disinfection measures will be escalated in some of the city’s worst-hit areas. This will likely mean some residents will be forced to move out temporarily – including those who have tested negative.
