After a plane with two persons on board disappeared over the English Channel, an emergency air-and-sea rescue mission to locate the aircraft was underway on Sunday.

Reports suggest that the two people on board were British nationals.
While the plane may have sunk in the English Channel, rescuers are expecting to locate the pilot and passenger on the surface.

According to reports, the Piper PA-28 jet took off from Wellesbourne, a village in central England, on Saturday for the northern French seaside resort of Le Touquet.

The British-registered plane took off with five other light aircraft as part of a joint trip.

According to the UK coastguard, it was last seen halfway across the Channel, some 25 miles (45 kilometres) from Dungeness in the southeast of England.

According to publicly available flight records, privately owned Piper PA-28R-200 Cherokee Arrow II, registration number EGVA, left Wellesbourne at 7.56 a.m. on Saturday and seemed to disappear off the radar over the Channel at 09.02 a.m.

The single-engine plane which has four seats was built in 1976 and belonged to a staff instructor at a Wellesbourne-based flying school.

As per reports, commercial ships in the area were also asked for assistance, but no debris has yet been found, and no witnesses have reported seeing the jet go down.
