Riot Police in France’s Central Paris charged and sprayed teargas on demonstrators protesting President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected on Sunday.

Video footage and images that are doing rounds on social media showed police breaking up the crowd of mostly young people who had gathered in the central neighborhood of Chatelet to protest.

Macron defeated far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a runoff vote earlier on Sunday by winning a second five-year term and preventing what would otherwise have been a major political upset.

Although Macron won by a comfortable margin, the abstention rate was expected to settle at the highest since 1969, with a substantial chunk of voters unwilling to vote for either Macron or Le Pen.

After midnight, about 100 people remained in the square, who were insulting law enforcement and chanting “We are anti-fascist!”.

According to French media reports, demonstrations were held in several other French cities on Sunday night. Hundreds of people protested both against Le Pen and Macron in the port city of Marseille.
