The New York City police are hunting for a gunman who put on a gas mask before setting off a smoke bomb on subway train and shooting 10 people.

However, in the latest update, police identified a suspect named Frank James (62) but he was not in custody as of Tuesday night and no charges were filed.

Authorities informed that at least 23 people were injured in the morning rush-hour attack that prompted new calls to fight a surge of violence in the city’s transit system.

Reportedly, the gunman fired a barrage of at least 33 bullets where 10 people were hit directly, including five hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Police said that 13 more people suffered from smoke inhalation or were otherwise injured in the chaos as panicked riders fled the smoke-filled subway car.

They also said that the attack is not being investigated as terrorism but police are ‘not ruling out anything’ as the motive remains unclear.

The attackers fled the Brooklyn platform in panic, leaving a subway car filled with screaming commuters and bleeding victims.

Police later found a Glock 17.9 mm semi-handgun in the subway and upon searching the subway car, investigators found two non-detonated smoke grenades, a hatchet, gasoline, fireworks and a key to a U-Haul van.
