Burrell's defense attorney, David Heath, has already moved for a new trial, arguing the verdict was "contrary to evidence"
In a historic ruling, a Georgia man has been sentenced to 475 years in prison, the longest of its kind in history.
What exactly happened? And why did the court hand down such a harsh punishment? Read on to uncover the full story.
Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, was convicted on 93 felony counts of dog fighting and 10 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty in Paulding County, Georgia, just northwest of Atlanta.
His shocking sentence stems from his role in breeding, training, and forcing over 100 pit bulls into barbaric fights for profit.
The details of the case came to light in court documents obtained by USA Today.
The Heaviest Sentence for Dog Fighting in US History
Each dog fighting charge carried a five-year prison term, while every animal cruelty charge added an additional year, stacking up to the staggering 475-year sentence. Even without the cruelty charges, Burrell would have still faced 465 years behind bars.
“Let this be a clear message that Paulding County will not accept or condone the inhumane treatment of animals-especially the violence and abuse associated with dog fighting,” the lead prosecutor on the case, KC Pagnotta, said in a statement.
“It is time as a society that we step up and stop the abuse and mistreatment of innocent animals,’ said Pagnotta.
Despite the monumental conviction, Burrell’s defense attorney, David Heath, has already moved for a new trial, arguing the verdict was “contrary to evidence” and “strongly against the weight of the evidence.”
As the legal fight continues, one thing is certain, this case has set a new precedent in punishing animal cruelty.
