2+2 India-US talks: Biden Modi likely to discuss India’s stand on Russia-Ukraine war

United States President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a virtual meeting to set the tone for the India-US 2+2 meeting.

The meeting comes in the critical backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war and India’s resistance to the heightened pressure from the West to weigh in on its side.

The White House press release mentioned, “President Biden will continue close consultations on the consequences of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine and mitigating its destabilising impact on global food supply and commodity markets.”

This will be Biden’s first one-on-one call with PM Modi since the Russian invasion began. The high-level meeting will enable both sides to continue their regular and high-level engagement aimed at further strengthening the bilateral ‘Comprehensive Global strategic Partnership’.

Meanwhile, India and the US have had differing views over Ukraine since the war began in February. While Delhi has used strong words to comment on the invasion, it hasn’t directly criticised Moscow. It has also abstained from all UN votes against Russia.

The meeting will also be attended by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and their US counterparts Antony Blinken and Lloyd Austin.
