Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as Italy‘s first female Prime Minister on Saturday.

Meloni recited the ritual oath of office, swearing to be faithful to Italy’s post-war republic and to act “in the exclusive interests of the nation.”

Meloni’s 24 ministers including 6 women followed, similarly swearing-in.

Giorgia Meloni took the oath before President Sergio Mattarella at Rome’s Quirinal Palace, which used to be the home of the popes and kings of Italy.

The appointment of Meloni is a historic event for the Eurozone’s third largest economy and Brothers of Italy, a political party that has never held office.

As part of a coalition with Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, 45-year-old Meloni, the head of the nationalist Brothers of Italy, swept to victory in an election last month.

In compare to her allies Forza Italia and the far-right League, which received eight and nine percent of the vote, respectively, it received 26 percent of the vote.

Her government, the 12th this century, replaces a national unity administration headed by Mario Draghi, former European Central Bank chief.

Meloni will head her first Cabinet meeting today.
