Canadian PM Trudeau makes surprise Ukraine visit; offers unwavering support

PM Trudeau met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in person for the first time since Russia began its invasion in late February.

In the midst of war in Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to the war-torn country in the capital of Kyiv to meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

It may be highlighted here that Trudeau met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in person for the first time since Russia began its invasion in late February.

Trudeau also went to Irpin, near Kyiv to witness first-hand the horrors that Russia had inflicted on the city. During the visit, the Canadian Prime Minister also interacted with Irpin residents, who were killed by the Russian forces. Notably, the Ukrainian town of Irpin was retaken by Russian troops in late March after fierce fighting. Canada, like other Western nations, has imposed broad economic sanctions on Russia and sent military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Notably, this high-profile visit come on a day when the fighting between the two forces has been intense ahead of the May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow to mark the Soviet Union’s win over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

Meanwhile, Trudeau’s Liberal government has also created a special scheme for Ukrainians and their families to apply for a temporary resident visa. He announced 50 million US dollars in fresh Canadian military support for Ukraine, including drone cameras, satellite imagery, small arms, and ammunition, as well as funding for demining operations.
