Beijing on Monday kicked off mass COVID-19 testing of over 3.5 million people in the city’s largest Chaoyang district following a spike in cases.

Beijing’s local government has ordered Chaoyang district to have three rounds of mass nucleic acid testing starting from Monday.

COVID-19 situation in China continues to grow severe each passing day with Shanghai alone reporting as many as 51 deaths on Sunday even after many weeks of lockdown.

The latest outbreak in China’s most populous city Shanghai which was first detected in late March has seen more than 4,00,000 cases recorded so far.

Shanghai reported 19,455 new cases on Sunday as its residents are under strict isolation.

The city has been almost entirely locked down since the start of the month, snarling supply chains, with many residents confined to their homes for even longer as it became the epicenter of the outbreak.

With this, China’s overall death toll due to coronavirus, ever since it first emerged in the central city of Wuhan in December 2019 rose to 4,776.

This latest COVID wave comes as the world’s second-largest economy has been struggling to stamp out its worst outbreak in two years consisting of harsh lockdowns taking a heavy toll on businesses and public morale.
