Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman’s Ultimatum to Yunus: Hold Elections by December

Army chief Zaman is at loggerheads with Yunus and his administration for several reasons
Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman has directed the Mohammed Yunus-led interim government in Dhaka to hold elections in the country by December.
Gen Zaman gave this ultimatum of sorts after a meeting with the top army brass as well as the chiefs of the Bangladesh Navy and Air Force yesterday.
Army chief Zaman is at loggerheads with Yunus and his administration for several reasons including Yunus’ attempt to hold on to power without any mandate, and taking decisions on national security issues without consulting the armed forces chiefs.
The Army Chief is particularly opposed to Muhammad Yunus and his aides almost giving in to the US pressure to open a so-called humanitarian corridor from Chittagong to Rakhine in Myanmar. The Army chief has opposed the corridor in clear terms as he clearly is against Bangladesh been sucked into the vortex of the internal war in Myanmar. Yunus, a known US stooge, obviously wants to please Washington so that he could get the US administration’ s backing in continuing to run the country without getting elected for as long as possible.
Army Chief Zaman’ s strong directive to the interim administration comes at a time when Dhaka, through Yunus’ actions, has soured ties with India and is facing a hit to its economy due to facilities being withdrawn by New Delhi like stopping the transhipment facility for Bangladeshi exports to third countries through India and so on.
Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman is also aware of Yunus’ nexus with Pakistan and Islamabad nudging Yunus to remove him by appointing an ISI-friendly Army Chief in Dhaka.
Obviously now, the Army Chief will closely monitor the moves of the Yunus regime and if things do not move in the desired direction, an eventual army takeover cannot be ruled out although, unlike some of his predecessors, Gen Zaman does not seem keen on military rule in Bangladesh.
